HSPS 102 - Introduction to Public Safety

Introduces the study of Public Safety. Provides the student with an overview of the requirements necessary to complete a degree in Public Safety; including an overview of faculty expectations and support that is offered to students in this program. Students are introduced to the degree requirements and are guided through the completion of an Individual Academic Plan. Students are introduced to Student Retention Services, Library System and Research, Writing Tutorial Services, and Career Services for assistance in successfully completing projects throughout the course and degree program. Areas of interest include Fire Science, Homeland Security, Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Medical Services.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop and Individual Academic Plan for completion of a degree in Public Safety.
  2. Research Career Opportunities in the field of Public Safety.
  3. Describe job opportunities in each of the selected fields within the Public Safety Degree program.
  4. Complete selected Independent Study courses required for entry level positions in Public Safety.
  5. Describe relevant knowledge, skills and abilities required for entry level positions in Public Safety.
  6. Determine certification and licensing requirements for entry level positions in Public Safety.
  7. Prepare and present a Cover page, Resume, and Oral presentation for a selected career goal in the field of Public Safety.
