HSPS 104 - Introduction to Environmental Technology

Introduce students to the field of environmental technology, the EPA, environmental regulations, toxic and non-toxic hazardous materials and waste. Studies subjects of weapons of mass destruction, birth defects, and the chemistry of acute and chronic ailments. Students will study personal protective equipment (clothing, sampling monitors, etc.) needed to handle hazardous waste and materials, and how to protect personnel in the event of an emergency event.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe what environmental technology is and what it does for the air, water and human environment.
  2. Describe safety practices for workers who work with hazardous materials and waste.
  3. Describe the biological warfare and weapons of mass destruction threat.
  4. Identify the side of effects of birth defects, kidney, lung, and other bodily illnesses related to toxicity.
  5. List the techniques that are used to protect the general public against toxic chemicals.
  6. Explain how the EPA CFR’s, Clean Air and Clean Water Acts are protecting the environment.
  7. Cite various hazards that may damage or destroy the environment in the future.
