HSPS 110 - Computer Applications in Homeland Security/Public Safety

A practical application of computer technology for personal and professional productivity. The objective is to use information technology appropriately and fluently to organize, analyze, and communicate information. Topics include hardware, software, office applications, information security and ethics and the Internet. Access to a standard office package, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software is required.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. List the use of computers in the public safety areas.
  2. Describe computer-aided dispatch uses.
  3. Describe uses of AutoCAD.
  4. Describe computer applications used currently in public safety.
  5. Describe how the computer is used in incident management and the electronic reporting system.
  6. Describe how communication systems (radios) and computer-aided dispatch is integrated.
  7. Identify the areas that computerization is used to manage and administer public safety.
  8. Describe how the computer is used to assist in management of Haz-Mat incidents.
  9. Describe how the computer is used to assist in management in large scale disasters.
