HSPS 123 - Hazardous Materials Technician


PREREQUISITES: HSPS 122 - Hazmat Awareness and Operations .

Students will be introduced to the following situations; hazardous material, managing the hazardous material incident, explosive and gas emergencies, shipping containers, cylinder safety devices, responding to flammable and combustible liquids, oxidizer, poison, and corrosive and radioactive emergencies. Emphasis on chemical identification, marking, storage, shipping and handling of hazardous substances; and uses basic monitoring instruments for hazardous areas to protect workers and first responders. Covers protective clothing and equipment emphasizing safety procedures and practices. Detailed labs are included. On completion of this course the student is eligible to take the national test certification for Hazardous Materials Technician.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain basic hazardous material terms, health and safety programs, informational programs and employee-training requirements regarding emergency and non-emergency responses.
  2. Examine basic hazard and risk assessment techniques, engineering controls, and work practices for employee protection.
  3. Select and use proper personal protective equipment provided to responders.
  4. Perform basic control, containment, and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available.
  5. Implement basic decontamination procedures.
  6. Understand the relevant standard operating procedures, site characterization and analysis, appropriate site controls, monitoring requirements, handling of drums and containers, and procedures for response at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.
