HSPS 125 - Emergency Medical Responder PROGRAM: Homeland Security/Public Safety CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2013
Provides students with information necessary to recognize emergency situations; assess the patient on different types of emergencies and apply appropriate emergency care. Covers CPR (Red Cross Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider), including one and two rescuer, and adult, infant and child resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillator operation.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Recognize emergency equipment and supplies.
- Maintain emergency equipment and supplies.
- Operate emergency equipment.
- Implement emergency procedures.
- Recognize when entry into the EMS system is appropriate.
- Administer first aid including CPR (Red Cross Professional with AED or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider), utilizing universal precautions.
- Perform one and two rescuer adult, child, and infant CPR.
- Maintain control of emergency situations.
- Utilize safety precautions to protect him/herself.
- Provide reassurance and support in communication with diverse populations.
- Document incidents appropriately.
- Discuss legal and ethical ramifications of emergency care.
