HSPS 141 - Environmental Management

Introduces students to environmental management and environmental regulations of the EPA. Students will study OSHA and CFRs relating to the environment and different safety regulations published by NIOSH. Environmental enforcement will be discussed and how the government mandates and enforces rules. Students will be introduced to the treatment and disposal of toxic waste and management of weapons of mass destruction and biological warfare.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the study of environmental management and how it relates to air, water and land.
  2. Describe the enforcement of the environmental regulations.
  3. Describe the role of the EPA, NIOSH, OSHA, and others in the regulation of hazardous waste.
  4. Describe safety practices for workers who have to work with hazardous waste.
  5. Describe the biological warfare and weapons of mass destruction threat.
  6. Describe actions taken to protect the worker from toxic and non-toxic waste materials.
  7. Describing efforts to stop deforestation, desertification, and the global warming trend.
  8. Describe the proper procedure for treatment, disposal and storage of hazardous waste products.
