HSPS 147 - Water Quality Management

Introduce the student to the management of water and waterways and the environmental regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Environmental enforcement will be discussed, along with weapons of mass destruction, biological warfare, and treatment, disposal and storage of toxic wastes. Additionally, students will study water quality issues, waterway resources, contamination, and treatment of water use.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the issues of the management of water and how they relate to communities.
  2. Describe the enforcement of environmental regulations.
  3. Explain Federal and State regulations dealing with water quality management.
  4. Describe safety practices for workers who work with contaminated water and waterways.
  5. Identify chemicals that are contaminants in our drinking water.
  6. Describe steps taken to protect the general public from contaminating water in our freshwater supply.
  7. Explain the value of The Clean Water Act and what it has done for society.
