HSPS 160 - Fire Apparatus and Equipment

This course examines in detail the various types of apparatus on the market today. Types of apparatus includes pumpers, aerials, elevating platforms and special apparatus. Students utilizing NFPA standards 1901, 1904, and 1500, will identify the proper chapters on a given situation. Topics will include apparatus placement on an emergency incident, types of pumps, tests, equipment, drafting, relay, nozzles, fittings and hose lays, and maintenance on various types of apparatus. Apparatus driving may be covered and practiced. When taken with the Hydraulics class, may prepare students to take the IDHS certification test on Pumping Apparatus.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the history of fire apparatus.
  2. Demonstrate proper driving techniques for fire apparatus.
  3. Describe the concepts of Class A and B pumper.
  4. Relate history for development of the NFPA standards.
  5. Describe the three positive displacements.
  6. Explain the theory of operation of the centrifugal pump.
  7. Describe the difference between a single stage and a two stage.
  8. Demonstrate/describe spotting and using a hydrant.
  9. Demonstrate/describe relay pumping.
  10. Describe standpipe and sprinkler operation.
  11. Describe hydrant color-coding.
  12. Demonstrate the use of water flow instruments.
  13. Demonstrate changing nozzles and fittings.
  14. Demonstrate/describe operating an aerial ladder.
  15. Demonstrate/describe operating an articulating aerial.
  16. Demonstrate/describe positioning and stabilizing the aerial.
  17. Demonstrate/describe the hydraulic system of an aerial.
  18. Demonstrate/describe testing aerial ladders.
  19. Compare principles of engine and ladder company operations.
