HSPS 161 - Fire Fighting Strategy and Tactics

Prepares students to make responsible decisions concerning incident objectives and the development of various strategies and tactics at the company level. Areas covered include pre-incident planning, size up and the development of strategic options. Also, the student will learn basic building construction, fire -behavior, fire control, fire ground factors, fire stream management and support activities. Responsibilities of engine and ladder companies are discussed. Emphasis is placed on safety in all the above areas. Command scenarios are used throughout the course. The NIMS/ICS is used as the Incident Command System of choice.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss measures to ensure firefighter’s safety and survival.
  2. Describe the basics of fire behavior.
  3. Describe advanced fire behavior with regards to combustible materials, flammable liquids and wild land.
  4. Develop examples of standard operating guides (SOG) for both permanent and temporary use.
  5. List 10 fire ground factors and their influence on a structure fire.
  6. Discuss the influence of fire ground factors upon fire behavior, in general.
  7. Analyze effects of various types of building construction upon fire behavior.
  8. Discuss types of fire control.
  9. Describe fire stream management and application.
  10. From a given set of facts, develop a pre-fire plan.
  11. Describe the operations for engine, rescue and ladder companies.
  12. Describe the operations for ladder placement.
  13. List and discuss support activities.
  14. Examine tanker operations at a rural fire.
  15. List and discuss factors comprising good communication operations.
  16. Describe the benefits of the Incident Command System application.
