HSPS 165 - Fire Fighter I

Fire Fighter I is the introductory course for those students who are seeking certification as a firefighter. This course will introduce the student to NFPA 1001 which serves as the standard of measurement for all firefighters in North America. Introduced students to fire service terminology, history and basic firefighting skills needed to complete and pass all requirements designed by the Department of Homeland Security for Basic, Mandatory and Fire Fighter I.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to meet or exceed the Job Performance Requirements (JPR’s) as outlined in NFPA 1001 for Fire Fighter I which include but are not limited to:

  1. Relate the history of fire service through examination.
  2. Discuss personal safety as related to all areas of NFPA 1500.
  3. Demonstrate the use of all personal protective equipment.
  4. Demonstrate the use of portable fire extinguishers.
  5. Define fire behavior and how it relates to safety and extinguishment.
  6. Demonstrate the proper use of portable ground ladders.
  7. List ventilation types and demonstrate the proper use of ventilation equipment.
  8. Demonstrate the proper care and use of nozzles and fittings.
  9. Demonstrate tying of 6 special fire service knots.
  10. Describe/demonstrate forcible entry techniques.
  11. List and demonstrate salvage and overhaul techniques.
  12. Describe and demonstrate the proper use of SCBA.
  13. Discuss and describe building construction concepts as it relates to the fire service.
  14. Demonstrate basic rescue and extrication techniques.
  15. List the principles of a water supply system.
  16. Demonstrate the proper care and use of selected fire hoses.
  17. Demonstrate how to develop and use fire streams.
  18. Demonstrate the ability to understand NIMS.
  19. Describe communications with the public and within the fire service.
