HSPS 172 - DOT Regulations

Provides a detailed study of the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Students will be introduced to certain Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Environmental Protection Agency regulations pertinent to hazardous materials transportation. Emphasis is placed on reading, interpreting, and summarizing sections from the Code of Federal regulations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Use 49 CFR to apply regulations in practical situations.
  2. Identify the role of the DOT in hazardous materials transportation.
  3. Select the packaging, labeling, documentation and placarding for selected hazardous materials.
  4. Determine the shipping requirements for various hazardous materials.
  5. Given an actual hazardous material accident, outline the reporting procedures, including filling out DOT’s Incident Report Form.
  6. Identify the safety considerations for transporting various hazardous wastes and materials, including radioactive material packages.
