Disaster and terrorism awareness lays a foundation to assist in addressing the apparent disconnect between the disaster and terrorism communities. A concentration on emergency management develops and understands the characteristics of each field and emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration between personnel and operations in these fields.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Compare and contrast the different missions of homeland security.
  2. Recognize the characteristics of terrorism.
  3. Differentiate among the numerous political origins of terrorist attacks.
  4. Critique stereotypical views about terrorists.
  5. Synthesize the factors influencing the appearance of terrorism.
  6. Compare and contrast the positive and negative features of modern news coverage.
  7. Evaluate reasons why more people are concerned about liberty today.
  8. Describe ways to minimize the desire in certain individuals to attack the United States.
  9. Predict the advantages of structural and non-structural mitigation.
  10. Evaluate the different roles of federal and state governments.
  11. Predict what types of activities will take place after terrorist attacks and evaluate the effectiveness of investigative practices.
  12. Assess damages resulting from terrorism.
  13. Critique prior problems in homeland security and devise new strategies for dealing with terrorism.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • The importance of the terrorist attacks of 9/11
  • Definitions of terrorism used by various governmental agencies
  • Political causes of terrorism
  • Common attitudes and personality traits of terrorists
  • How the various media gain from terrorist activity
  • How terrorism differs from war
