HSPS 279 - Homeland Security/Public Safety Capstone Course


PREREQUISITES: Program Advisor Approval.

Prepare the student for entry into Homeland Security/Public Safety careers in fields such as public administration, hazardous materials, environmental health and safety management or fire science. Review of procedures for interviewing, team participation, and ethical and productive job performance. Provides students the ability to complete program outcomes assessments and portfolio development.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the career paths available to those with the program degree.
  2. Effectively prepare for an interview, effective behavior during the interview, and how to answer questions in an interview.
  3. Explain the necessity of being an effective team player.
  4. Outline the necessity for effective communication skills and how to sharpen these skills.
  5. Describe the need for life-long learning.
  6. Practice effective time management.
  7. Demonstrate effective use of electronic presentations and create an electronic portfolio.
  8. Take required outcomes assessments.

GENERAL EDUCATION OUTCOMES MEASURE:

All associate degree graduates must complete the Ivy Tech General Education assessment in their capstone course. This is a capstone course requirement. The instructor will advise when and how the assessment will be administered. Performance on the assessment will be part of the course grade. Please consult your instructor with questions.
