HSPS 280 - Co-op/Internship in Homeland Security/Public Safety PREREQUISITES: Program Advisor Approval and the student must have completed a minimum of 30 credits toward their degree with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Provides fieldwork experience in an approved agency that is specific to their career objective. Students will gain on-the-job experience while earning credit toward an associate degree.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Explain the agency’s policies and procedures and its relationship to the community.
- Demonstrate skills in communication and problem solving in the internship experience.
- Describe the organization structure of the agency.
- Explain the major goals of the agency and describe the methods used to realize these goals.
- Demonstrate student’s professionalism through reporting for work on time, maintaining appointments and conforming to the rules and regulations of the agency.
- Maintain a journal describing the weekly experience.
- Demonstrate competence in observing, listening and writing skills through the previous objective.
- Demonstrate competence in identifying, assessing and resolving problems arising from the internship experience.
- Evaluate the internship learning experience.
- Write a cover letter and resume.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Developing professionalism in interaction with those persons involved with the agency.
- Managing the stress experienced by the Emergency Management professional in the workplace.
- Learning to work under supervision.
- Experiencing the real world of the Emergency Management profession.
