HUMA 269 - Pilates

This course introduces students to a system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. This method is based on the concepts of body awareness, balance, concentration, coordination, control, flowing movement, and precision. This course will cultivate improved physical strength and flexibility through direct participation in class. The required exercises will be performed on a mat.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate correct head and cervical spine placement.
  2. Demonstrate proper pelvic placement.
  3. Discuss and demonstrate a closed rig cage.
  4. Demonstrate lateral breathing and scapular stabilization.
  5. Describe the major muscle groups involved in various exercises.
  6. Analyze one another and participate in discussions regarding proper alignment and execution.
  7. Discuss the history of Pilates exercise.

  • Origins of Pilates exercise
  • Exercise sequencing and relationships
  • Major muscle groups
  • Proper execution of exercises
  • Pilates and anatomical terminology
  • Different modes of stretching
  • Proper breathing technique
