HUMS 103 - Interviewing and Assessment


PREREQUISITES: HUMS 101 - Introduction to Human Services  and HUMS 102

Introduces and develops basic interviewing skills. Includes assessment strategies and treatment planning. Third in a series of three introductory human services courses.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate basic attending skills.
  2. Learn and demonstrate appropriate use of open and closed questions.
  3. Recognize various forms of verbal and nonverbal behavior in clients.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate use of paraphrasing.
  5. Understand and practice eliciting and reflecting feelings.
  6. Identify the steps of the interview process.
  7. Recognize the appropriate use of confrontation.
  8. Evaluate the appropriate use of self-disclosure.
  9. Recognize the components of a psychosocial assessment.
  10. Collect accurate documentation.
  11. Identify beginning concepts of case management.
  12. Apply beginning skills in interviewing for psychological and social problems, resources, and strengths.
