HUMS 114 - Social Services in Long-Term Care

Provides practical and useful information about aging and institutionalization. Focuses on the role of social services within the long-term care facility. Indiana State Department of Health State Certification requires 48 hours of attendance.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the history of the social service profession and nursing homes.
  2. Identify physical, psychological, and social changes associated with aging.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology utilized in the long-term care setting.
  4. Describe power of attorney, guardianships, living wills, and advance directives.
  5. Formulate the development of an ethics committee in a long-term care facility.
  6. Describe pre-admission screening, levels I and II, and dementia documentation.
  7. Identify the steps in the long-term care admission process.
  8. Describe state and federal regulations and the survey process.
  9. Identify community supports and resources.
  10. Describe techniques to encourage communication during resident interviews.
  11. Compare the differences between Medicaid and Medicare.
  12. Complete a social history, intake assessment, care plan, progress note, and MDS.
  13. Identify the rights of residents and the role of the long-term care ombudsman.
  14. Describe the general purposes of resident and family councils.
