HUMS 117 - Foundations of Direct Support Professionals

A broad overview of the major concepts associated with providing support to individuals with disabilities in the community. The curriculum meets state and federal guidelines for direct support staff training. Students successfully completing the course will receive a state sanctioned certificate.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Recognize and demonstrate their knowledge of Core A and B.
  2. Understand and demonstrate First Aid and CPR.
  3. Learn the causes of abuse, neglect, and exploitations and demonstrate strategies to prevent them.
  4. Recognize and exhibit the major elements of Person-Centered services.
  5. Understand and demonstrate strategies for keeping themselves and the customers they support safe and healthy.
  6. Learn and practice the major concepts and strategies associated with communicating with customers and team members.
