HUMS 124 - Activity Director Basic

Explores the philosophy and investigates the development of therapeutic activity programs for older persons. Focuses on activities that will meet the individual’s physical, social, and emotional needs.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Know the history of the activity profession.
  2. Describe the rationale for activity programming in long-term care facilities.
  3. Develop a personal philosophy of activities.
  4. Demonstrate how to network with professional peers at local, state, and national levels.
  5. Recognize roles and interrelationships of disciplines, services and agencies.
  6. Describe the concepts of human development in later adulthood.
  7. Describe psychosocial and physical needs and changes in the elderly.
  8. Identify common dysfunctions, disorders and diseases of later adulthood and describe appropriate intervention techniques.
  9. Exhibit knowledge and understanding of the ethics of the profession.
  10. Identify legal, regulatory, and professional standards for giving care and services in long-term care facilities.
  11. Plan group, individual and independent activities based on individual strengths, interests, or needs.
  12. Develop an awareness of individual needs as they impact group delivery.
  13. Plan a calendar of events to meet the collective life skills and styles of a resident population.
  14. Develop programs to include all levels of resident participation.
  15. Evaluate techniques for delivery of services and develop resource-gathering techniques.
  16. Demonstrate the principles of communicating with residents including verbal and nonverbal techniques, and active and reflective listening.
  17. Develop techniques for working as a team member with other departments in the facility.
  18. Identify organizational skills including time management, development of a failing system, managing equipment and supplies, and developing a budget for an activities program.
