LEGS 211 - Criminal Law and Procedure

A theoretical and practical survey of criminal law in the United States. This includes examining conduct that constitutes crimes and the theories and constitutionality of the punishments for such crimes. Course topics include the American criminal justice system, criminal liability, the elements of specific crimes, constitutional limits, the Indiana Code (with specific emphasis on the penal code), criminal defenses, victims, punishments and sentencing. The student will also become familiar with the Indiana Criminal Code and Indiana Rules of Criminal Procedure.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Interpret and apply the Indiana Criminal Code and Indiana Rules of Criminal Procedure.
  2. Debate and discuss the major sociological theories of crime and punishment, including their impact on the offender, the victim and society.
  3. Apply Constitutional limits on Criminal Law.
  4. Identify a criminal act and any appropriate defenses.
  5. List the specific elements of various crimes and liability; including but not limited to:
    1. Vicarious liability
    2. Inchoate Crimes
    3. Crimes against persons
    4. Crimes against property
    5. Crimes against public order and morals
    6. Crimes against the State
  6. Discuss a paralegal’s role in the criminal representation process.
