LEGS 214 - Constitutional Law

This course is an introduction to the constitutional law of the United States of America, with an emphasis on the decisions of the United States Supreme Court. This course will explore various methodologies of constitutional interpretation and modes of constitutional analysis. Topics covered include the history of the Articles of Confederation, the history of the Constitution of the United States, the role of the judiciary, the separation of powers and relations among the federal branches of government, the powers of the national government and federalism based on Congress and the states and individual constitutional rights. The projects will include writing three (3) case briefs, one (1) memorandum of law and one (1) memorandum of points and authorities.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Examine the history of the Articles of Confederation and how they are a part of the constitutional law.
  2. Define the reasons for the United States Constitution.
  3. Explain the meaning of the Preamble of the Constitution.
  4. Explain the different Articles of the Constitution and their purposes.
  5. Identify the duties of the three branches of the federal government.
  6. Examine the purpose of checks and balances.
  7. Explain Federalism and the separation for a second time by dividing power between the Federal government and state governments.
  8. Examine the guarantee of the rights of individuals.
  9. Analyze three (3) Supreme Court Decisions and write a case brief on each.
  10. Create two (2) Memorandums of Law, one containing points and authorities.
  11. Create two (2) Memorandums of Law, one containing points and authorities.
