LEGS 220 - Evidence

Examines the rules and policies governing a trial court’s fact- finding process, as exemplified by the Indiana Rules of Evidence and the Federal Rules of Evidence. The scope of the course will focus on the individual Rules and the paralegal’s role in using the Rules in litigation assistance. Topics also include evidence gathering and the use of technology and how it impacts the paralegal’s use of obtaining such evidence.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Examine and define various Indiana Rules of Evidence.
  2. Examine and define various Federal Rules of Evidence.
  3. Describe the intent behind each rule of Evidence.
  4. Explain the use of each rule of Evidence.
  5. Apply the rules of Evidence throughout both a civil and criminal lawsuit.
  6. Analyze and evaluate relevant evidence.
  7. Employ the discovery process to obtain evidence.
  8. Explain the difference between physical evidence and demonstrative evidence.
  9. Restate the ethical obligations of the paralegal regarding evidence.
