LEGS 225 - Wrongful Convictions

The Wrongful Convictions course will be a service learning opportunity, designed specifically for our evening students who will not be able to participate in our daytime practicum program. In this course, students will explore the three major areas giving rise to claims of wrongful conviction by reviewing case, constitutional and statutory law. In addition, students, at the discretion of community partners, will be given issues to investigate related to an active case.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss case, constitutional and statutory law related to ineffective assistance of counsel claims.
  2. Discuss case, constitutional and statutory law related to prosecutorial misconduct.
  3. Discuss case, constitutional and statutory law related to the discovery of new evidence.
  4. Examine the processes of the criminal appellate system, including post-conviction relief.
  5. Discuss and model the confidentiality required within a law office.
  6. Investigate issues in a client’s case.
