This course includes more detailed and advanced study of the derivatives of medical terms, symbols and signs. It presents an in-depth study of the correlation between medical vocabulary and the application of those terms in the anatomy and physiology of the body, related diseases, conditions and treatment.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Define, spell and pronounce specialized medical terms.
- Apply terms as they relate to diagnostic and treatment procedures.
- Review and expand on terms as they relate to each body system.
- Apply terms to practical applications (i.e. interpreting medical records, researching medical codes, listing current drugs, etc.).
- Define, spell and pronounce medical terms and abbreviations used in pharmacology, psychiatry, radiology, medical laboratory testing, gerontology and child health.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- In-depth review and expansion of medical terms as they relate to body systems and medical specialty.
- Demonstration of knowledge via oral, spelling, and written tests.
- Practical application of terms using various reference books, and medical records.
- Additional focus on terms related to psychiatry, radiology, medical laboratory testing, gerontology and child health.
