MEAS 223 - Medical Assisting Scribe Specialist Internship

This course provides students with a simulated internship experience as a medical scribe in a variety of healthcare settings, with emphasis on the emergency department and medical office. Students will demonstrate proficiency in documenting all the information obtained by the provider during the encounter including the patient history, the physical observations of the exam and the provider’s assessment and plan of care.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss routine scribing experiences and unusual occurrences in healthcare facilities
  2. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, components of the medical record, and requirements of documentation to support services.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of federal initiative requirements.
  4. Provide an understanding of essential elements of documenting a physician-patient encounter and E/M levels.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of medical personnel and billing practices.
  6. Demonstrate rules associated with medico-legal risk mitigation.
  7. Demonstrate familiarity with HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules.
  8. Describe new methods and/or techniques used in the scribing process within physicians’ offices
  9. Create a relevant resume and practice interviewing techniques.
