An introduction to funeral service, ancient history, historical development, present funeral practices, values of funeral service, personal qualifications, ethics.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe the history of funeral services from ancient times through modern practices with emphasis on the development of funeral practices in the United States.
- Define terminology used in funeral service.
- Recognize the impact of grief on society, the variations in funeral practices due to cultural differences, reactions to death, grief, and bereavement, and the impact of family structures.
- Compare the customs of various cultures throughout the world including customs in the United States.
- Identify and classify funeral service organizations.
- Evaluate the role of the funeral director, including personal, professional, and ethical qualifications.
- Analyze services to clients, including notification of death and removal, pre-need and at-need arrangements, preparation of the decedent, visitation, funeral services, modes of disposition, and shipping procedures.
- Identify topical areas of current discussion.
- Analyze ethical topics as they relate to funeral service.
- Discuss the importance of funeral services as they relate to grief processes.
