MORT 211 - Funeral Directing I


PREREQUISITES: MORT 105 - Embalming Theory I  and MORT 110 - Cremation Processes and Management

The student will be taught specific counseling procedures used during the funeral arrangement conference. Specific attention will be paid to the communication techniques and skills that will assist individual family members with handling bereavement, grief and the mourning process. In addition, students will explore: notification of death, transfer of remains, and funeral service options. Emphasis is placed on proper identification procedures, care and preparation of the deceased, shipping of human remains and other best practices concerning funeral service.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the primary responsibilities of the funeral director.
  2. Describe the importance of thorough communication with embalming staff concerning realistic outcomes of embalming and restorative art processes.
  3. Develop communication skills necessary to explain complex complications that may occur during embalming processes in layman’s terms to client families.
  4. Explain the time frames in which the services of the funeral director are typically provided during an at-need funeral service.
  5. Describe and apply proper telephone procedures.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of transferring human remains from the place of death to the funeral home using professionally accepted procedures and equipment.
  7. Employ best practices in securing and inventorying personal effects of the deceased.
  8. Apply communication skills necessary to meet with a family during the arrangement conference.
  9. Analyze basic expectations for the shipping of human remains both domestic and international.
  10. Recall the specific vocabulary associated with funeral service.
  11. Demonstrate the professional overview and image unique to the funeral service.
  12. Recognize best practices when dealing with third party providers.
  13. Define the various methods of disposition and describe examples of each.
