MORT 217 - Funeral Service Practicum II


PREREQUISITES: MORT 207 - Funeral Service Practicum I

A continuation of the MORT 207 - Funeral Service Practicum I  course. Develops practical funeral directing and embalming skills, combining work experience in the funeral home. Students will be assigned to an affiliated funeral home serving under the direct supervision of a licensed preceptor.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of embalming to facilitate communication with licensed preceptor and instructor.
  2. Understand the process of embalming, and the need for sanitation and disinfection of the remains.
  3. Demonstrate conceptual and practical knowledge of factors and strategies for determining the best method to be used.
  4. Understand the factors that go into case analyses.
  5. Demonstrate and understand the selection of different sites for injection and drainage.
  6. Understand the selection of embalming fluids for different cases.
  7. List the potentially harmful chemicals used in the preparation room, and their regulation.
  8. Demonstrate principles of funeral directing.
  9. Demonstrate technical outcomes through creation of a portfolio.

GENERAL EDUCATION OUTCOMES MEASURE:

All associate degree graduates must complete the Ivy Tech General Education assessment in their capstone course. This is a capstone course requirement. The instructor will advise when and how the assessment will be administered. Performance on the assessment will be part of the course grade. Please consult your instructor with questions.
