Introduction to precision measurement techniques and applications. Provides instruction in surface plate inspections, gauging techniques and instruments, optical comparators, hardness testing, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM). Presents calibration and measurement system analysis.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain the principles of mechanical measurement used in the manufacturing environment.
  2. Define precision measurement and layout procedures for a variety of measuring instruments and applications.
  3. Perform measuring instrument calibration.
  4. Read and interpret drawings and specifications.
  5. Apply the concepts of measurement, gauging and tolerances.
  6. Apply tolerances, limits and fits to meet manufacturing requirements.
  7. Prepare clear, concise and accurate technical reports.
  8. Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate technical problems and information.
  9. Solve mathematical problems related to inspection, gauging and layout.
