MRTC 174 - Motorcycle Frame and Electrical System

PROGRAM: Automotive
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2
LAB HOURS MIN: 2
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Summer, 2011

Introduces the fundamentals and principles of motorcycle electronics and diagnosis. Extensive use of digital multimeters and circuit troubleshooting is covered. Emphasis is placed on reading and understanding wiring diagrams and symbols. Diagnosing, starting, and charging systems are also covered. The second part of the course addresses motorcycle frame design and will show the geometry, types, and construction of motorcycle frames and design.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safe shop practices while working with electrical systems and test equipment.
  2. Identify tools and diagnostic equipment used in the service and repair of electrical systems.
  3. Demonstrate and describe the basic laws of electricity.
  4. Define electrical circuit terminology and symbols.
  5. Identify electrical components in an electrical schematic and circuit.
  6. Calculate resistance, current, and voltage problems using Ohm’s Law.
  7. Perform voltage, current, and resistance measurements using the proper measuring devices.
  8. Calculate resistance, voltage, and current in series, parallel, and series-parallel, and electrical circuits.
  9. Study starting and charging system theory and basic circuits.
  10. Perform voltage drop testing on starting and charging circuits.
  11. Perform battery testing and diagnosis.
  12. Perform wiring repair.
  13. Understand parts of a frame and identify.
  14. Study and understand frame geometry.
