This course provides an introduction to the field of nanotechnology. The course starts with a review of the history of nanotechnology and continues with a description of characterization techniques, top-down nanofabrication, bottom-up nanofabrication and the impact of nanotechnology on other areas of science and technology.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

Understand nanotechnology terminology.
Delineate the history of nanotechnology.
Understand the uniqueness of the nano-scale.
Describe the characterization techniques.
Know nanofabrication processes.
Be familiar with top-down nanofabrication.
Be familiar with bottom-up nanofabrication.
Understand the impact of nanotechnology on medicine and biology.
Understand the impact of nanotechnology on microelectronics.
