NRSG 128 - Practice Issues for Practical Nursing
PREREQUISITES: NRSG 110 - Medical Surgical Nursing II and NRSG 111 - Medical Surgical Nursing II Clinical ; this course must be completed in the final semester of the PN program.

This final nursing semester course explores strategies utilized to promote lifelong personal and professional development. Analyzes the roles of the licensed practical nurse within the context of the larger healthcare environment. Examines internal and external influences on nursing practice, including evidence-based practice standards. Explores basic concepts of nursing leadership and management. Analyzes legal and ethical issues in healthcare.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Appraise the role of the practical nurse, incorporating professional, legal and ethical guidelines, in providing collaborative, safe, culturally competent, and holistic patient-centered care (SLO 1).
- Explore the relationships of the biological, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual components of patient needs in an effort to improve quality and safety of patient care (SLO 2).
- Examine the use of technology as a means of navigating the electronic health record, communicating with inter/intraprofessional teams, and being involved with decision making in the delivery of quality and safe patient care (SLO 3).
- Discuss current evidence-based practices and critical thinking techniques used in health care delivery systems (SLO 4).
- Examine communication practices that foster effective collaboration with patients, families and the inter/intraprofessional team for planning and delivery of quality patient care (SLO 5).
- Explore accountability and responsibility issues in fulfilling the role of the practical nurse, in light of personal and professional growth through lifelong learning (SLO 7).
- Discuss the leadership and management role of the practical nursing related to internal and external influences of politics, economics, health care delivery trends, and role stressors on nursing practice (SLO 8).
- Prepare for the transition to the workforce through development of strategies for NCLEX-PN exam preparation, licensure, job-seeking activities, and opportunities for involvement in professional organizations (SLO 7).
