PARM 240 - Community Paramedicine I

This course is the first of two courses focused on the preparation of a community paramedic. The course will focus on how paramedics operate in an expanded role by assisting with public health and preventive services to underserved populations. An overview of the role of the community paramedic, social determinants of health models, and community outreach will be addressed. As well, the course will focus on clinical care for a variety of populations and proper documentation skills.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Analyze the role of a community paramedic in the healthcare system.
  2. Describe the systems of care and the role of a community paramedic within the system.
  3. Discuss and identify the social determinants of the health model.
  4. Perform a community-needs assessment to identify high-risk and high-need populations.
  5. Identify agencies and conduct outreach that establishes formal or informal relationships with such agencies.
  6. Utilize different strategies to locate and approach a variety of clients regardless of the settings.
  7. Define culture and ethnicity and identify the role each plays in an individual’s identity in order to promote a culturally competent practice.
  8. Discuss the importance of balancing stress and wellness and develop a personal health and wellness plan that includes self-assessment, strategies for coping with stress, and understanding compassion fatigue.
  9. Demonstrate clinical care for a variety of identified populations (i.e., patients with Congestive Heart Failure, Diabetes, and Infections).
  10. Demonstrate the principles of proper documentation.
  11. Describe the purpose of community outreach.
