PHOT 204 - Commercial Photography

Introduces more advanced studio and lab techniques used in advertising and industrial photography. Emphasizes creative problem solving applications toward advanced commercial photographic assignments.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Work to a client’s exact specification.
  2. Scale photographs correctly for reproduction.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of reproduction requirements for photographs and an understanding of the printing processes involved.
  4. Successfully use the technique of “painting with light”.
  5. Produce architectural interior and exterior photographs of a quality acceptable to industry standards.
  6. Produce quality portraits in studio and on location.
  7. Emulate other successful photographer’s working methods.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of precise control of light as regards to placing highlights and shadows.
  9. Successfully output images in black and white and color for their intended use.
  10. Operate a digital camera in the field.
  11. Operate a 4x5 camera and adjust properly for correcting distortion and focal plane.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge of mixed lighting/color temperature situations.
  13. Produce advertising and publication photographs with justified approaches to composition and lighting.
  14. Demonstrate knowledge of file management.

  • Environmental portraiture

  • Fashion photography

Product photography:

  • Lighting small and large products
  • Painting with light
  • Using light sources to define highlights and shadows
  • Using colored gels

Advanced methods of using a view camera; Scheimpflug, correcting distortions

  • Photographing products to the designer’s specifications
  • Photographing food

Architectural photography:

  • Shooting interiors with strobe and hot lights
  • Balancing ambient light and strobe lighting
  • Twilight and night photography
  • Composing room interiors and building exteriors
  • Working with various color temperatures and films
  • Traditional and digital photographic working methods
  • Advanced black and white and color methods
  • Archiving methods as they relate to photography in the field
