PTAS 103 - Administrative Aspects of the Physical Therapist Assistant

Addresses the legal and ethical aspects of physical therapist assistant and patient care along with charting, documentation, report writing, patient history procurement, record keeping, charges, insurance information including diagnostic and procedure coding, third party reimbursement, Medicare, Medicaid, electronic claims and patient rights including American Disabilities Act policy and architectural barriers identification. Discusses current issues in health care provision. Explores patient, family, and professional communication techniques, body language and electronic communication as well as techniques in patient teaching. Includes performing within the limitations of scope of skills, basic principles of levels of authority and responsibility, planning, time management, supervisory process, performance evaluations, policies and procedures.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

    • Examine various communication strategies and their effectiveness in the delivery of physical therapy
    • Demonstrate effective means of conflict resolution

    • Explain the importance of cultural competency and sensitivity in the provision of physical therapy
    • Describe the different forms of diversity: ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic
    • Identify cultural norms in healthcare of common ethnic populations of Indiana
  3. Behavior and Conduct
    • Identify the effects of federal, state, and accreditation laws, rules, and regulations on the practice of physical therapy 7D1
    • Summarize how federal legislation affects employment in healthcare 7D1
    • Identify types of liability in healthcare and strategies to minimize risk exposure
    • Identify situations of suspected fraud that require reporting 7D1
    • Identify situations of suspected abuse that require reporting 7D1, 7D27
    • Apply the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant to a given healthcare scenario 7D4
    • Compare and contrast the roles, responsibilities, provision of care, and supervision requirements of the referring physician, physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, and physical therapy aide 7D1, 7D28

  6. Scope of Practice - Plan of Care: adjusts, recognizes, reports, clarifies with supervising PT
    • Apply the practice act of a given jurisdiction to the relationship, responsibilities and provision of care by the physical therapist and/or physical therapist assistant 7D20
    • Identify the effects of federal, state, and accreditation laws, rules, and regulations on the role of the physical therapist assistant 7D21
  7. Documentation and Discharge Planning [with supervising PT]
    • Explain the role of the PTA in the various types of physical therapy documentation: standardized questionnaires, SOAP notes, progress notes, discharge planning/summaries, and medical justification letters 7D22, 7D24m, 7D22
    • Restate the characteristics of sound defensible documentation
    • Prepare accurate SOAP note documentation including medical terminology, education, necessary communication with supervising PT, short and long term goals, and Plan of Care 7D22

    • Define Evidence Based Practice
    • Identify the effects of Evidence Based Practice on the delivery of physical therapy services
    • Give examples of appropriate resources for the selection of quality healthcare literature in the field of physical therapy 7D10
