PTAS 217 - Treatment Modalities III


PREREQUISITES: PTAS 201 - Treatment Modalities II , and PTAS 115 - Clinical I

Provides an in-depth approach to therapeutic exercise as performed by the physical therapy assistant. Covers basic anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous systems and activities of daily living. Includes exercise physiology and neurophysiology and advanced principles and procedures of therapeutic exercise appropriate for cardiopulmonary, cardiovascular, orthopedic and neurologic conditions, stroke, spinal cord and peripheral nerve injuries. Discusses prevention measures, specialized techniques and the utilization of specialized therapeutic equipment and correlates them to exercise applications. Addresses appropriate applications of kinesiology and principles of physics. Provides practice and implementation of theories and techniques of PTAS 106 - Treatment Modalities I  and PTAS 202 - Treatment Interventions for Special Populations  in the lab setting.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Communication
    • Apply an effective client interview during a simulated patient scenario 7D7, 7D15
    • Develop an oral presentation of an effective treatment protocol with appropriate data collection and traditional neurological intervention strategies under the PT Plan of Care for patients with a given neurological disorder 7D11, 7D17
    • Employ effective communication strategies in order to develop written, oral, and practical skills for simulated patient scenarios within the scope of the Physical Therapist Assistant 7D11, 7D17
  2. Behavior and Conduct
    • Demonstrate professional behavior reflecting the scope of a Physical Therapist Assistant 7D1, 7D4, 7D5
    • Demonstrate the legal and ethical role of the Physical Therapist Assistant under the supervision of the Physical Therapist in the intervention of patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or nervous system disorders
  3. Plan of Care - Understanding [toward goals and intended outcomes]
    • Implement anatomy and physiology information for pathophysiologies noted in the plan of care for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients with neurological, cardiovascular, and/or pulmonary system disorders 7D9, 7D21
    • Describe the principles for common medical procedures used for assessment of the neurological, cardiovascular, and pulmonary system disorders 7D18
    • Report indications and contraindications for rehabilitation interventions for patients with neurological, cardiovascular, and/or pulmonary system disorders in the physical therapy plan of care 7D17, 7D18
    • Examine the impact of co-morbidities for patients with neurological, cardiovascular, and/or pulmonary system disorders in the physical therapy plan of care 7D16, 7D19
    • Provide examples of common physical, functional, and psychosocial impacts for patients with neurological, cardiovascular, and/or pulmonary system disorders noted in the physical therapy plan of care 7D2, 7D16
    • Differentiate the traditional neurological intervention theories, strategies, and treatment techniques noted in the physical therapy plan of care 7D9, 7D11
    • Differentiate the normal effects of exercise for patients with neurological, cardiovascular, and/or pulmonary system disorders noted in the physical therapy plan of care 7D19, 7D20
    • Apply appropriate patient care requirements with regard to safety, privacy, dignity, and efficiency in simulated patient scenarios 7D8, 7D27
  4. Plan of Care - Implementation [under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist]
    • Functional training
      • Demonstrate therapeutic interventions for a patient scenario with a neurological system disorder for rehabilitation of mobility, transfers, and self-care activities 7D23d
    • Infection control procedures
      • Report standard precautions in regard to patients with cardiopulmonary system disorders 7D27
      • Report standard precautions of tubes, secretion mobilization, and open wounds in regard to patients with neurological and/or cardiopulmonary system disorders 7D23a, 7D23i
    • Manual therapy techniques
      • Implement effective and safe range of motion for a patient with a neurological system disorder in a simulated patient scenario 7D23e, 7D24g
      • Implement effective handling and positioning techniques for a patient with neurological disorders in a simulated patient scenario 7D23h
