PTAS 224 - Current Issues and Review


PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of all required General Education courses and Program Chair Approval
PROGRAM: Physical Therapist Assistant

Teaches the sources of physical therapy research and discusses the recognition of the roles and responsibilities of physical therapy assisting. Requires completion and presentation of an independent project. Includes a comprehensive review of the course to prepare the student for licensure exam.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Communication
    • Devise a formal presentation of physical therapy management of a patient in clinical care under the supervision of the student physical therapist assistant with clinical instructor guidance 7D9, 7D11, 7D12
  2. Individual and Cultural Differences
    • Illustrate the effect of individual and cultural difference on the delivery of patient care in physical therapy 7D8
  3. Behavior and Conduct
    • Relate the role of the Physical Therapist Assistant in physical therapy in formal presentation of a patient in clinical care under the supervision of the student physical therapist assistant with clinical instructor guidance 7D4, 7D5
  4. Plan of Care - Understanding [toward goals and intended outcomes]
    • Devise a formal presentation delineating plan of care components including interventions, goals, and outcomes of a patient in clinical care under the supervision of the student physical therapist assistant with clinical instructor guidance 7D9, 7D11, 7D18
    • Utilizing the ICF model, demonstrate how interactions between heath conditions and contextual factors influenced the implementation of the plan of care and eventual patient outcomes 7D16
  5. Plan of Care - Implementation [under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist]
    • Distinguish contraindication, indications, procedural parameters and safety issues concerning the following intervention strategies in physical therapy:

  8. Emergency Response
    • Distinguish emergency situations potential to physical therapy intervention and the appropriate response required by the Physical Therapist Assistant 7D21, 7D22, 7D26
  9. Documentation and Discharge Planning [with supervising Physical Therapist]
    • Distinguish appropriate roles and components for the required documentation in physical therapy delivery 7D25, 7D31
  10. Healthcare Literature
    • Differentiate appropriate professional scientific literature relevant to physical therapy 7D10
    • Analyze professional scientific literature relevant to physical therapy in order to prepare a written and/or oral presentation 7D10, 7D11
    • Collect evidence to support conclusions based on best practice in field of physical therapy within the context of the written and/or oral presentation 7D10, 7D11
