RADT 111 - Orientation and Patient Care
PREREQUISITES: Acceptance into the program through appropriate assessment and Program Chair Approval

Introduces the profession of radiology and the practitioner’s role in the health care system. It also provides students with the basic concepts of patient care dealing with the emotional and physical needs of the patients including infection control and standard precautions.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify and describe other health science professions that integrate the patient’s total health care.
- Discuss the reimbursement/payment options for health care services.
- Discuss the role and value of a mission statement of an institution and imaging sciences.
- Discuss the relationship between institutional administrative personnel and imaging services.
- Define accreditation (departmental and institutional), credentialing, certification, licensure, and regulations and the agencies involved.
- Discuss continuing education and career opportunities for the radiographer.
- Describe the scope of practice for the radiographer defined by the ASRT and state licensure.
- Explain the stages of death and dying to include the ethical, emotional, personal and physical aspects it has on the radiographer and patient.
- Explain various means of communication.
- Demonstrate correct principles of body mechanics when transferring patients.
- Describe various immobilization techniques for various patient conditions.
- Describe methods of evaluating patient status and patient history.
- Describe the vital signs used to assess the patient’s condition and know normal values.
- List the normal ranges for specific laboratory studies.
- Describe the importance of Standard Precautions and Transmission-based Precautions.
- Identify symptoms related to emergency situations, medical interventions with contrast media.
- Discuss the emergency medical code system at the clinical settings and the student’s role.
- List and identify the specific types of tubes, lines, catheters, and collections devices.
- Describe legal/ethical behavior in imaging.
