RDTH 100 - Introduction to Radiation Therapy

Content is designed to provide the student with an overview of the foundations in radiation therapy and the practitioner’s role in the healthcare delivery system. This course will provide students with a historical overview of radiation therapy and its role in medicine. An introduction to radiation therapy treatment techniques, equipment, terminology, and professional responsibilities will be included.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the policies and procedures of the educational program and clinical education settings.
  2. Identify the responsibilities of the radiation therapist and radiation therapy student.
  3. Discuss the evolution of the discipline.
  4. Identify various radiation therapy treatment techniques, equipment and terminology.
  5. Discuss cancer management in healthcare today.
  6. Define cancer management principles and radiation therapy techniques.
  7. Define key terms in radiation therapy.
  8. Explain radiation Safety procedures for radiation therapy.
  9. Explain health safety procedures for personnel and patients.
  10. Discuss the radiation therapist Scope of Practice, Practice Standards and the Professional Code of Ethics.
  11. Differentiate between accreditation, credentialing, certification, registration, licensure and regulations.
  12. Discuss career advancement and benefits of continuing education.
  13. Describe principles of image formation.
  14. Understand film, grid and screens
  15. Analyze relationships of factors affecting image contrast, density and resolution.
  16. Practice general radiographic procedures.
