RDTH 110 - Virtual Simulation Lab


PREREQUISITES: Admission to the Radiation Therapy Program

The purpose of this course is to further introduce the student to procedures performed in Radiation Therapy, and to provide the student with greater opportunities to gain practical experience. During this first semester, the student is expected to develop the competency to perform simple clinical procedures with progressively less assistance. Emphasis continues to be given to the development of professional responsibility and the practice of total patient care and radiation safety practices.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION:

  1. Set up the VERT room and position the patient according to the prescription in the treatment chart.
  2. Explain common treatment procedures to patients; listen to the instructor explain uncommon treatment procedures.
  3. Explain procedures for appropriately disrobing and draping patients to maintain dignity.
  4. Correctly and safely position the virtual patient’s treatment area over the appropriate part of the treatment table.
  5. Operate all modes and functions of the virtual treatment machine pendant, setting appropriate field size, gantry rotation and collimator rotation in a reasonable and safe manner.
  6. Operate all modes on the virtual treatment machine console.
  7. Demonstrate complete familiarity with the treatment chart.
  8. Observe treatment procedures taking place in your assigned area.
  9. Independently set up a simple virtual treatment field using the correct parameters, accessories, and alignment devices.
  10. With assistance, set up intermediate virtual treatment fields using the correct parameters, accessories, and alignment devices.
  11. With assistance, review the port films and CT images and identify correct anatomy.
  12. Record dose data in treatment chart, correctly totaling appropriate data.
  13. Practice appropriate radiation safety and patient care at all times.
  14. Complete a set number of competencies.
  15. Operate within the radiation therapy scope of practice.
  16. Demonstrate values and attitudes congruent with the profession’s standards and ethics.
  17. Apply concepts of teamwork.
  18. Adapt to changing situations.
  19. Use critical thinking for accurate treatment delivery.
  20. Demonstrate the principles of radiation protection.
  21. With assistance, design, compare, contrast and implement treatment plans.
  22. Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication.
  23. Demonstrate safe, ethical and legal practices.
  24. Apply appropriate safety, transfer and immobilization principles.
  25. Demonstrate appropriate interaction with instructors and classmates.
  26. Document all aspects of patient care and management in the appropriate record.
  27. Document knowledge of the institution’s procedures in response to emergencies, disasters and accidents.
  28. Evaluate outcomes to continually improve radiation therapy services.
