RDTH 225 - Clinical Externship II

The purpose of this course is to further introduce the student to procedures performed in Radiation Therapy, and to provide the student with greater opportunities to gain practical experience. During this third semester of clinical education, the student is expected to develop the competency to perform simple to intermediate clinical procedures with progressively less assistance. Emphasis continues to be given to the development of professional responsibility and the practice of total patient care and radiation safety practices.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION:

  1. Under the Therapists’ supervision, set up room and position the patient according to the prescription in the treatment chart.
  2. Explain common treatment procedures to patients; listen to the room therapist explain uncommon treatment procedures.
  3. Direct patients to appropriately disrobe and drape patients appropriately to maintain dignity.
  4. Correctly and safely position the patient’s treatment area over the appropriate part of the treatment table.
  5. Operate all modes and functions of the treatment machine pendant, setting appropriate field size, gantry rotation and collimator rotation in a reasonable and safe manner.
  6. Operate all modes on the treatment machine console.
  7. Demonstrate complete familiarity with the treatment chart.
  8. Observe and assist in all treatment procedures taking place in your assigned area.
  9. Independently set up a simple treatment field using the correct parameters, accessories, and alignment devices.
  10. With assistance, set up intermediate treatment fields using the correct parameters, accessories, and alignment devices.
  11. With assistance, take weekly port films, review the port films and submit them for physician approval.
  12. Record dose data in treatment chart, correctly totaling appropriate data.
  13. Practice appropriate radiation safety and patient care at all times.
  14. Complete a set number of competencies.
  15. Operate within the radiation therapy scope of practice.
  16. Demonstrate values and attitudes congruent with the profession’s standards and ethics.
  17. Formulate priorities in daily clinical practice.
  18. Apply concepts of teamwork.
  19. Adapt to changing clinical situations.
  20. Use critical thinking for accurate treatment delivery.
  21. Demonstrate the principles of radiation protection.
  22. Design, compare, contrast and implement treatment plans.
  23. Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication.
  24. Demonstrate safe, ethical and legal practices.
  25. Apply appropriate safety, transfer and immobilization principles.
  26. Demonstrate appropriate interaction with patients, patients’ family and friends.
  27. Document all aspects of patient care and management in the appropriate record.
  28. Document knowledge of the institution’s procedures in response to emergencies, disasters and accidents.
  29. Evaluate outcomes to continually improve radiation therapy services.

NURSING OBJECTIVES

  1. Recognize the various skin reactions associated with radiation therapy treatments and the measures that are to be taken for prevention and allocation of the problems.
  2. Demonstrate the proper methods of assisting the physician in abdominal, ENT, pelvic and breast examinations.
  3. Indicate tumors and other critical structures demonstrated on various x-rays and scans.
  4. Participate in followup of therapy patients observing changes in the tumor, skin, patient symptoms, etc.
  5. Keep nursing supplied with appropriate materials for good health care of patients receiving radiation.
  6. Proficiently in O2 administration and vital signs attainment.

SIMULATION OBJECTIVES:

  1. Common simulation procedures.
  2. Directing patients to dressing rooms and explaining clothing needs to be removed while maintaining patient dignity.
  3. Preparing the room for simulation and having the required material ready for each particular procedure and physician (contrast, catheters, gloves, syringes, etc.).
  4. Safely operating all modes and functions on the simulator pendant.
  5. Safely operating all modes and functions on the simulator console.
  6. Demonstrating complete familiarity with the treatment chart.
  7. Preparing the room and positioning the patient according to the physician’s instructions.
  8. Practicing appropriate patient care and radiation safety techniques at all times.
