RESP 203 - Advanced Emergency Management PREREQUISITES: Current CPR AHA-BLS for Healthcare Professionals or equivalent PROGRAM: Respiratory Therapy CREDIT HOURS MIN: 1 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2019
Application of various techniques in advanced cardiopulmonary support during life threatening events. At the end of the course, students will be expected to successfully apply knowledge in a mock adult patient care setting.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: FROM 2020 NBRC MATRIX: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate BLS skills
- Perform clinical assessment to identify and describe dysrhythmias:
- Palpation of pulse, rhythm and intensity
- Auscultation (breath sounds, heart sounds & rhythm and blood pressure
- Perform procedures to gather clinical information:
- 12 Lead ECG
- Noninvasive monitoring (pulse oximetry and capnography)
- Evaluate procedures results:
- 12 Lead ECG
- Noninvasive monitoring (pulse oximetry and capnography)
- Recommend diagnostic procedures:
- 12 Lead ECG
- Noninvasive monitoring (pulse oximetry and capnography)
- Initiation and modification of interventions to maintain a patent airway including the care of artificial airways:
- Recognition of difficult airway
- NPA and OPA
- Esophageal Tracheal tubes/supraglottic airways
- Endotracheal tube
- Support oxygenation and ventilation
- Minimizing hypoxemia (patient positioning secretion removal)
- Noninvasive ventilation
- Ensure modifications are made to the respiratory care plan
- Starting treatment based on patient response
- Discontinuing treatment based on patient response
- Recommendations for pharmacologic interventions
- Cardiovascular medications
- Changes to drug, dose, administration frequency, mode, or concentration
- IV/IO, ETT route
- Recommend defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing
- Utilize evidence-based medicine principles
- Classification of disease severity
- Recommendations for changes in a therapeutic plan when indicated
- Provide respiratory care in high risk situations
- Cardiopulmonary emergencies, excluding CPR
- Recognize signs and symptoms of a CVA, TIA, ACS, chest pain, MI and recommend appropriate evidence based medicine to treat patient
- Medical emergency team (MET)/rapid response team
- Interprofessional communication
- Understand and demonstrates effective team skills during an emergency situation
- Recognize return of spontaneous circulation and appropriately manage the patient

- For AHA/ACLS certification students must demonstrate skill competency in all learning stations, pass the CPR-AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test, megacode test and pass the written test with the designated cut score.
