PROGRAM: Respiratory Therapy
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 1
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2019

Application of various techniques in advanced cardiopulmonary support during life threatening events. At the end of the course, students will be expected to successfully apply knowledge in a mock adult patient care setting.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: FROM 2020 NBRC MATRIX: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate BLS skills
  2. Perform clinical assessment to identify and describe dysrhythmias:
    1. Palpation of pulse, rhythm and intensity
    2. Auscultation (breath sounds, heart sounds & rhythm and blood pressure
  3. Perform procedures to gather clinical information:
    1. 12 Lead ECG
    2. Noninvasive monitoring (pulse oximetry and capnography)
  4. Evaluate procedures results:
    1. 12 Lead ECG
    2. Noninvasive monitoring (pulse oximetry and capnography)
  5. Recommend diagnostic procedures:
    1. 12 Lead ECG
    2. Noninvasive monitoring (pulse oximetry and capnography)
  6. Initiation and modification of interventions to maintain a patent airway including the care of artificial airways:
    1. Recognition of difficult airway
    2. NPA and OPA
    3. Esophageal Tracheal tubes/supraglottic airways
    4. Endotracheal tube
  7. Support oxygenation and ventilation
    1. Minimizing hypoxemia (patient positioning secretion removal)
    2. Noninvasive ventilation
  8. Ensure modifications are made to the respiratory care plan
    1. Starting treatment based on patient response
    2. Discontinuing treatment based on patient response
    3. Recommendations for pharmacologic interventions
      1. Cardiovascular medications
      2. Changes to drug, dose, administration frequency, mode, or concentration
      3. IV/IO, ETT route
    4. Recommend defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing
  9. Utilize evidence-based medicine principles
    1. Classification of disease severity
    2. Recommendations for changes in a therapeutic plan when indicated
  10. Provide respiratory care in high risk situations
    1. Cardiopulmonary emergencies, excluding CPR
      1. Recognize signs and symptoms of a CVA, TIA, ACS, chest pain, MI and recommend appropriate evidence based medicine to treat patient
    2. Medical emergency team (MET)/rapid response team
    3. Interprofessional communication
      1. Understand and demonstrates effective team skills during an emergency situation
  11. Recognize return of spontaneous circulation and appropriately manage the patient
