SURG 112 - Application of Surgical Fundamentals

Demonstrates the application of surgical fundamentals. Correlates theory to practice by requiring students to participate as members of a surgical team in laboratory simulations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate procedures for preparation of items for sterilization.
  2. Demonstrate the basic surgical positions incorporating the use of positioning aides in ensuring patient safety.
  3. Apply principles of aseptic technique in simulations.
  4. Perform surgical hand antisepsis, gowning, and gloving of self and team members in simulations.
  5. Demonstrate basic surgical skin prep.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate draping techniques.
  7. Identify and demonstrate the handling of sutures, instruments, equipment and supplies in simulations.
  8. Perform and document basic patient assessment.
  9. Perform urinary catheterization.
  10. Demonstrate adherence to policies for standard precautions.
