VISC 213 - Raster/Vector Graphics III

In this course, the creation of the digital images is further investigated. Advanced raster (Adobe Photoshop) and vector Adobe Illustrator) illustration techniques are taught. An emphasis in final output is given to portfolio projects for a variety of media in the Visual Communications industry.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the interdependence of imaging software programs.
  2. Demonstrate advanced image manipulation and illustration techniques.
  3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of choosing the correct image resolution for output devices.
  4. Demonstrate ability to work in an advanced manner with channels (raster), layers (raster/vector), and paths (vector).
  5. Create digital illustrations that exhibit current professional techniques.
  6. Create digital illustrations which exhibit a personal style.
  7. Demonstrate a working knowledge of advanced image preparation for print and digital publication.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Choosing the proper software program for a given design problem.
  • Color modes: grayscale, rgb, cmyk,duotone, lab color specs. icc profiles
  • Efficient selection method for the given design problem: Selection Tool, Direct Selection Tool, Lasso Tool, Magnetic Lasso Tool, Marquee Tool, Magic Wand, Quick Selection Tool
  • Layer Masks; Blending Modes, Opacity Masks, Gradient Mesh
  • Solving wysiwyg issues in output
  • Keyboard shortcuts for efficiency
