VISC 214 - Publication Design III

Provides advanced instruction in creative publication design. Uses an industry standard desktop publishing package to design and publish professional multi-page documents. Produces samples for student portfolios, which may include annual reports, catalogs, newsletters, menus, magazine design, newspaper design, book design and/or other multi-page communications. Requires performance and completed work to be portfolio quality.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Employ advanced design skills in the execution of comprehensive commercially viable projects.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to solve communication and marketing design problems.
  3. Visualize ideas by means of thumbnail sketches.
  4. Develop fresh, creative concepts.
  5. Prepare and deliver complete professional client presentations including a discussion of the message, concept and target audience.
  6. Ascertain all necessary job specifications (i.e. paper selection, number of colors, etc.) to obtain a printing quotation.
  7. Select and/or create, if necessary, effective visuals.
  8. Utilize and consistently incorporate advanced typographic design skills.
  9. Explore various binding and finishing methods.
  10. Present orally a project to your peers, clients, faculty, or advisors.
