PROGRAM: Industrial Technology
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1
LAB HOURS MIN: 4
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019

Offers basic instruction in oxy-fuel welding with emphasis on welding techniques in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. Includes brazing, soldering and flame cutting. Focuses on safety hazards and safe practices in oxy-fuel welding and cutting.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe safety practices used with oxy-fuel equipment. [a,c,e,f]
  2. Demonstrate safety devices used with oxygen and acetylene cylinders. [a,c, e,f]
  3. Demonstrate proper start-up and shut down procedures. [a,c,e,f]
  4. Describe the different types of fuel gases used. [a,c,e,f]
  5. Describe proper methods of storing, using and shipping gas cylinders. [a,c,e,f]
  6. Identify the A.W.S. classification for filler materials. [e,f]
  7. Determine the correct tip size for welding and cutting. [a,e]
  8. Determine the correct methods of performing cutting operations. [a,e]
  9. Perform butt, lap tee and corner joint welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions on mild steel plates. [a,e]
  10. Perform brazing and soldering on butt, lap, and tee joints on mild steel and/or copper. [a,e]
  11. Perform straight, bevel, and circular cuts on a mild steel plate. [a,e]
  12. Perform a bevel cut on 6” schedule 80 pipe with hand-held torch. [a,e]
