WELD 205 - Welding Codes Specifications and Estimating

PREREQUISITES: Advisor Approval.
PROGRAM: Industrial Technology
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019

Provides students with different types of welding codes and testing operations. Covers procedures, specifications and information about filler materials, positions, post-heat and preheat treatment, backing strips, preparations of parent metals, cleaning and defects. Introduces students to various welding processes used in the welding industry. Prepares students with a background in which will assist them in taking the American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector exam. The AWS, ASME and other codes are discussed.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the requirements for a welding inspector. [e,f]
  2. Identify the various welding processes used in the welding industry. [e,f]
  3. Describe the requirements of a welding procedure specification. [a,c,e,f]
  4. Describe the requirements of a procedure qualification record. [a,c,e,f]
  5. Describe the requirements of a welder performance qualification document. [a,c,e,f]
  6. Describe properties of metals and other metallurgical terms. [a,c,e,f]
  7. Describe documents used by a welding inspector. [a,c,e,f]
  8. Perform visual inspection of weldments with discontinuities and defects. [a,e]
  9. Describe the destructive testing procedures. [a,c,e,f]
  10. Describe the non-destructive testing procedures. [a,c,e,f]
  11. Perform Magnetic particle inspection on known defects. [a,e]
  12. Perform Penetrant testing on known defects. [a,e]
  13. Perform “hands-on” testing of weld discontinuities with micrometers, dial calipers, fillet weld gauges and other measurement tools. [a,e]
  14. Perform “open book” test reference using an applicable code. [a,e]
