WELD 209 - Welding Certification


PREREQUISITES: Program Advisor Approval.
PROGRAM: Industrial Technology

Prepares the student for certification in shielded metal arc, GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and other welding processes through study of the welding procedures and standards established by agencies such as the American Welding Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Read and interpret a WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) document. [a,b,e,f,i]
  2. Interpret a PQR (Performance Qualification Record) document. [a,b,e,f,i]
  3. Interpret a WPQ (Welder Performance Qualification) record document. [a,b,e,f,i]
  4. Interpret visual acceptance criteria established by the welding codes. [a,b,e,f,i]
  5. Explain the different destructive and non-destructive weld tests. [a,b,e,f,i]
  6. Prepare welder qualification test plate and pipe coupons according to the applicable code specifications. [a,b,e,f,i]
  7. Perform a welder performance qualification test according to the AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Code Specifications. [a,b,e,f,i]
  8. Perform a welder performance qualifications test as per ASME Section IX code. [a,b,e,f,i]
  9. Identify weld defects and discontinuities found in weldments. [a,b,e,f,i]
  10. Interpret fillet weld sizes with a fillet weld gauge. [a,b,e,f,i]
