Examines current issues in non-commercial photography. Explores attitudes of photographers and critics on a wide range of topics through directed reading, class discussion, and gallery visits. Appropriate presentation, software options, and sequencing of imagery are stressed, along with historical examples that provide background for understanding the medium.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify and discuss those historical events in photography that have an impact on present-day fine art photographic practice.

  2. Discuss the role of the critic and evaluate his/her contribution to photographic practice.

  3. Identify important photographers and their work by examining slides and websites.

  4. Name and describe several present-day concerns of a social, political, or psychological nature.

  5. Produce photographs that demonstrate an expression of one or more of the topics studied in a manner consistent with present-day practice in the fine arts.

  6. Work with a variety of alternative processes.

  7. Work with contemporary experimental processes.

  8. Demonstrate knowledge of mixing chemicals for alternative processes.

  9. Exhibit a working knowledge of merging traditional and digital working techniques.

  10. Build a mini portfolio of experimental work.
