A study of the principles and components required for the transmission and distribution of electric power. To provide the student with an understanding of high voltage systems, single and three phase circuits, voltage regulation, power grids. Overhead and underground distribution. Safety, buying and selling of power.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Define the various sources of power and explain how they are generated. [a, c, f, g]
  2. Explain the power grid and power delivery systems. [c, f]
  3. Describe the power line safety guide line in accordance with the American Public Power Association (APPA). [a, f, g]
  4. Describe single and three phase transformers. [b, f, h]
  5. Describe voltage regulation in power systems. [c, f, h]
  6. Describe the process of buying and selling of power between utility companies. [a, c, f, h]
  7. Explain how power is monitored in a power grid. [c, f, h]
  8. Describe cabling requirements for overhead and underground power. [c, f, h, q]
  9. Describe the various faults that can occur in overhead and underground power distribution. [c, f, h, i]
